About:
I never thought I'd end up in social work. In fact, this is my fourth career - I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to be when I grew up. But when I left my high-powered corporate advertising job and got certified as a CASAC in New York State, working in drug and alcohol treatment, I realized that wasn't enough depth for the people I was serving. They needed true therapy, so I went back to school, got another bachelor's degree, and went to Fordham for graduate school. As I was working as a CASAC, I collaborated with social workers who impressed upon me the importance of being part of the national organization, NASW. They made it clear that supporting the national body was essential, and I've never regretted joining. It's been over 25 years now since I graduated in 1994, the same year my last child finished college. The work of a social worker is vital to the health of any community, from adoption and child welfare to geriatric care. We may not make much money, but this is a true vocation, not just a job. I've met so many wonderful social workers who consider this their calling, not just a paycheck. Social work has the power to transform lives, allowing people to live better, more fulfilling lives. The most important lesson I've learned, both personally and professionally, is to listen carefully. It's remarkable what you can uncover when you really tune in and hear people's stories. Some of my most impactful experiences have been working with returning Vietnam vets, helping them piece their lives back together, and witnessing individuals in drug and alcohol recovery maintain their sobriety years later. To have someone I helped decades ago recognize me and share their continued success - that's the true privilege of this work, being part of people reclaiming their authentic lives. That is what I'm most grateful for and what is closest to my heart. In addition to parenting and Grandparenting and the ministry work, this is my heart.
