Dr. Swanson’s educational background is both comprehensive and impressive. He earned his undergraduate degree from Mount Union College in Alliance, OH, and went on to complete his medical degree at the University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry, in Rochester, NY. Following his internship at Rochester General Hospital, Dr. Swanson pursued his dermatology residency at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, MI, where he also completed a fellowship in Mohs chemosurgery. Further advancing his expertise, he undertook a fellowship in advanced dermatologic and Mohs surgery at the University of California at San Francisco.

Throughout his career, Dr. Swanson has held esteemed positions, including Chair of the Department of Dermatology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), Associate Director for Clinical Operations at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, and Professor of Dermatology, Otolaryngology, and Surgery at OHSU. Before joining OHSU as Director of Dermatologic Surgery in 1989, he led the surgical unit and Multidisciplinary Melanoma Program at the University of Michigan.

Board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology, Dr. Swanson is a respected member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Dermatology Foundation. His specialization in treating skin cancers, including challenging cases requiring Mohs surgery, has made him a leader in his field. He has mentored 35 fellows who have become prominent figures in academic centers and clinical practices globally.

Dr. Swanson is also an accomplished author and international lecturer, with over 200 journal articles, multiple textbooks, and numerous textbook chapters to his name. His expertise extends beyond skin cancer to include cosmetic procedures such as laser surgery, dermabrasion, chemical peels, filler injections, and Botox.

In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Swanson enjoys a fulfilling life in Missoula, MT, where he embraces country living. He spends his leisure time engaging in western riding, golfing, fishing, and cherishing moments with his five grandchildren and their families.
