He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from McGill University, where he also completed his residency in Internal Medicine, before pursuing advanced training through fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI).

Dr. Shen is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, and Interventional Cardiology, as well as by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. His comprehensive expertise allows him to manage complex cardiac conditions with precision, innovation, and a strong focus on long-term patient outcomes. He was the first physician to perform nine new cardiac procedures in Hawaii, including atherectomy, coronary stenting, electrophysiologic testing, catheter ablation, implantable cardioverter-defibrillator implantation, resynchronization therapy, and leadless pacemaker implantation. He also performed the first angioplasty in Hong Kong.

Dr. Shen has served on the teaching faculty at UCSF, Stanford University, and the University of Hawaii, where he formerly held the positions of Professor of Medicine and Chief of Cardiology. He has authored more than 70 scientific publications and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, Heart Rhythm Society, Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Intervention, Royal College of Physicians of Canada, American College of Physicians, and American College of Chest Physicians. He was also a former Governor of the American College of Cardiology.

Fluent in Chinese (Cantonese, Shanghainese, and Mandarin) with knowledge of French, Dr. Shen serves a diverse patient population with cultural sensitivity and clear communication. Recognized by the Top Doctors in America since 1996, the Castle and Connolly's Top Doctors, and Honolulu Magazine's Top Doctors (also since 1996), he is widely respected by patients and peers for both his clinical excellence and compassionate approach to care.
