Jackson, MS – The Global Directory of Who’s Who proudly recognizes Dr. Robert Smith, M.D., ABFM, FAAFP, DHL, CEO, of Central Mississippi Health Services, Inc., for his remarkable contributions to medicine and healthcare reform. A graduate of Tougaloo College with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry (1957) and Howard University School of Medicine (1961), Dr. Smith completed his clinical training at Cook County Hospital’s West Side Medical Clinic and Cook County Graduate School in Chicago, IL and other post graduate institutions. His dedication to equitable healthcare access and community service has defined his illustrious 60-year career in medicine.

Dr. Smith has held numerous influential academic positions, including Clinical Professor in Community Health at Tufts University, Professor Emeritus in Clinical Medicine at Brown University, and a key role as charter faculty in establishing the family medicine program at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, where he was a Co-Principle Investigator of Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities (ARIC) which has contributed to several other programs such as the Jackson Heart Study where he wore several hats, a patient of both studies.  

Dr. Smith is also a proud member of the National Medical Association, where he has been a member since his medical school days and has received several awards locally and nationally and one of their distinguished awards. He has also been a sixties plus proud member of the American Medical Association. After he and two other associates picketed on the boardwalk in June 1963 asking that the American Association come out inequivalent against discrimination of the black patients and physicians following the death of Medgar Evers. He received the medal of Velour in 2017 at the AMA’s convention in Hawaii. He served as Southern Field Medical Director for the Medical Committee of Human Rights where he came up with the idea of a new institution that was later named community health centers now FQHCs. These centers now serve thirty-three million Americans in USA and its territories and three hundred thousand in Mississippi.  

He has helped to recruit several physicians and healthcare workers to the state of Mississippi with a large economic impact on the economy. He has worked as Director of Healthcare at Tougaloo College where he got involved with pre-health programs and has seen hundreds of medical physicians, dentists, and other healthcare workers become trained, some have returned to their home state of Mississippi.

He has been a charter member of several organizations and institutions locally, statewide, and nationally. Throughout his career, he has practiced family medicine at several esteemed institutions, including St. Dominic Hospital, Baptist Medical Center, and Merit Health Central. He was invited by President Johnson to the Whitehouse Conference in health in 1965, which brought about Medicare and Medicaid.

He was Invited back in 1966 working with Regional Medical Programs (RMP) (Public Law 89239) nationally and locally. RMP had bought about advances in cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke and later renal diseases in our communities. During this session, he has been a strong advocate for more money for medical education, service, and research.  

His extensive leadership and advocacy have shaped generations of physicians and improved the quality of care across the nation. His tireless efforts and visionary leadership have left an indelible mark on the healthcare landscape of the American South, exemplifying the true spirit of compassion, service, and excellence in medicine.
